The palpable need to do a new translation of the Hebrew Bible is a consequence of the painful inadequacies of all the modern versions done by committee. They manifest a failure to consider the stylistic shaping and the literary articulation of the Hebrew as well as a seriously faulty sense of English style and even English usage. The lecture will provide a few illustrations of these failings and then proceed to demonstrate how such features of the Hebrew as rhythm, word choice, and expressive syntax might be addressed in translation.
